HIV Positive Zimbabwean Musician Deported From Canada

An HIV positive Zimbabwean artist has been deported from Canada after being declared a danger to the public after he apparently had sex with women without disclosing his status.

Charles Kokanai Mzite, who has performed before Oprah Winfrey no-less. He said he had been infected since 1995 and his wife had passed away in 2000.

When he moved to Canada in 2002 after a meeting a national from that country he entered that country as a refugee. At that time it was not required to submit an HIV test before entering.

Settling in Victoria, Mzite met up with other musicians and joined a local marimba band called Jambanja.
When he applied for permanent residency he refused to complete the medical information which would have required him revealing his status.

It is said that with four separate women Mzite assured them that he was HIV negative.

When one of the women contracted HIV she went to the police and upon being pressed he admitted his status.

He was found guilty on four accounts of sexual assault and sentenced to 10 years in jail in 2009. He will be deported when he is released.

Parole has been denied once already.

Zimbabwe law also criminalises the willful transmission of HIV and the sentence is a lot steeper. You will get no less than ten years.
